It was DJ Pooh’s influence as a creative consultant, writer, and producer that gave the game its realistic yet entertaining balance. His deep understanding of West Coast hip-hop and street culture helped mold San Andreas into the classic it is today.
Recruiting Iconic Voices
DJ Pooh was instrumental in assembling a cast that would bring San Andreas to life. He recruited several prominent West Coast hip-hop figures, including: Young Maylay as CJ (Carl Johnson), the game’s protagonist, Yo-Yo as Kendl Johnson, CJ’s sister and MC Eiht as Ryder, a key figure in the story.
Additionally, he convinced Rockstar to allow legendary DJ Julio G to play himself as the host of Radio Los Santos, instead of voicing a fictional character. This decision ensured the station resonated with real hip-hop fans.
A Hip-Hop and Film Icon
Beyond gaming, DJ Pooh is a multi-talented figure in hip-hop and film. He co-wrote and co-produced Friday (1995) alongside Ice Cube, a film that became a cornerstone of Black comedy. He also directed The Wash (2001), starring Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. His extensive experience in entertainment gave him the perfect skill set to inject San Andreas with an unparalleled level of cultural credibility.
Connecting Generations: From CJ to Franklin
DJ Pooh’s contributions extended beyond San Andreas. His industry connections helped bring Shawn Fonteno—Young Maylay’s cousin—into the GTA universe. Fonteno later voiced Franklin Clinton, one of the three protagonists in Grand Theft Auto V.
