5 GTA San Andreas characters based on Rappers

GTA san andreas characters

Released in 2004, Grand Theft San Andreas is the best GTA game till this day. There's several reasons but the biggest one is the charismatic characters, several who share similarities to famous rappers from the 90s.

Rockstar Games are known for adding real life allusions to their games and GTA San Andreas is no different.

Set in 1992, the game's first area East Los Santos is a parody of early 90s South Central LA,  furthermore some characters apparently are a reference to several legendary west coast rappers.

1. Ryder

Ryder is a high ranking member of the Grove Street Families who betrayed CJ and his own gang by joining forces with the opps. He is voiced by West Coast gangsta rapper MC Eiht.

Ryder resembles the late Compton based rapper Eazy-E, who was the leader of the rap group N.W.A. Like Eazy-E, Ryder has a jheri curl hairstyle and always wears sunglasses with a baseball cap.

Furthermore Ryder is extremely short in stature like his real life counterpart, who stood at 5'2 feet.

2. Carl Johnson

A character who needs no introduction, Carl Johnson aka CJ is the leading protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and second in command of the Grove Street Families street gang.

Fans have been comparing grove street gang members CJ, Sweet, Ryder and Big Smoke to the rap group N.W.A and this theory isn't far fetched, the most obvious being Ryder/Eazy-E. Meanwhile CJ shares a slight resemblance to Dr Dre.

3. Sweet

Sean Johnson better known as Sweet is leader of the Grove Street Families and the older brother of the protagonist Carl Johnson. He is voiced by American actor and comedian Faizon Love.

Sweet's face bears a resemblance to American rapper, actor and filmmaker Ice Cube, which is mainly due to his constant mean mugging. To a lesser extent fans have also likened him to MC Ren from N.W.A.

4. OG Loc

Jefferey Cross aka OG Loc is a wannabe gangster rapper with terrible flow. He is introduced as an old friend to the Grove Street Families, but later betrays them when they fall from power. He is voiced by Jonathan Anderson.

Some believe that OG Loc is a mocking satire of Ja Rule, although Ja Rule became popular in the early 2000s, several years after the setting of GTA San Andreas.

There could be some truth to this as both men are named Jeffrey, portray themselves as tough gangsters and are known for stealing rhymes.

Theories believe that OG Loc was also based on Tupac. Like OG Loc, Tupac was known to act gangster and was gang affiliated, however he wasn't a real gangster. In GTA San Andreas Definite edition, OG Loc even resembles him.

5. Madd Dogg

Madd Dogg is a rich and famous gangster rapper from Los Santos who is voiced by American rapper and actor Ice T.

His name is likely an allusion to the rapper Snoop Dogg. This is further proven because Mad Dogg's "Forty Dogg" album cover is a parody of Tha Dogg Pound's real life album Dogg Food.
